For more than 100 years it stood proudly on the
hills of Tuscany, providing Italian families with the finest olives.
But this prime olive tree has moved onto a new
life in somewhat colder climes 3,000 miles away - a garden in
Hambledon.
Henley company Heritage Tree Services had the
ambitious task of moving the tree, which comes from a sustainable
source, on a specially designed truck.
And its new owners will be keeping their fingers
crossed for a good summer - the tree could again produce olives if
the weather is right.
It spent two years in a nursery in northern
Italy, where it was kept in colder conditions to help it acclimatise
to its new surroundings.
Company boss Hugo Loudon told the Standard:
"It is a beautiful old tree and should thrive in its new home.
It will look beautiful.
"We have sourced. Trees from all over Europe for
our clients, and also delivered English trees to the continent."
"If it could talk I am sure it would have some
wonderful stories to tell- it is fascinating to think who has sat
underneath it throughout the past century”
"A well looked after olive tree should last
indefinitely, and it will look great in the Hambledon Valley."
